COUNSELOR IN TRAINING PROGRAM

Somerset Beach Campground & Retreat Center

Somerset Center, MI

LIMITED AVAILABILITY FOR SUMMER 2026

What's Involved?

As a Counselor in Training (CIT), you’ll step into a leadership role, working alongside experienced counselors or activities staff. You’ll assist with guiding campers through daily activities, fostering friendships, and modeling Christ-like values.

Your week starts on Sunday at 2 PM with a comprehensive training to prepare you for the responsibilities ahead. You may jump in to help with programming like the zipline, trading post, or other camp activities. When campers arrive on Sunday evening, you’ll support your assigned counselor, building relationships and ensuring every camper has a safe and unforgettable experience.

Many students begin their camp service journey as a Student with a Testimony (SWAT), helping in a variety of roles. Those who demonstrate strong leadership, teamwork, and a heart for serving others may be invited to take the next step and return as a CIT.

Who Attends?

This program is designed for high school students, ages 14–17, who want to grow in leadership and faith while making a difference in campers’ lives. Whether you’re considering a future as a camp counselor, looking to develop new skills, or simply want to give back, the CIT program is an incredible opportunity.

We welcome individuals who love working with others, enjoy outdoor activities, and are passionate about making an impact in a Christ-centered environment.

The SWAT experience attracts campers who want to give back to the program that has poured into them, and it’s often the first step toward becoming a CIT — though it isn’t required.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (C.I.T.) PROGRAM FAQS
What qualities are you looking for in a CIT?

We’re looking for high school students who are responsible, enthusiastic, and excited to learn. A heart for service, a love for Jesus, and a willingness to grow are key to being a successful CIT.

Will I be counseling or assisting the activities staff?

You’ll typically work alongside a counselor, assisting with camper activities and group dynamics. However, at times you may join the activities staff for a new perspective on how the program operates.

What does a CIT week look like?

Your week kicks off with training on Sunday at 2 PM, preparing you to lead and assist effectively. On Sunday, you’ll meet your assigned counselor and campers. The week is packed with activities, mentorship opportunities, and time to grow as a leader. You’ll finish Thursday evening after completing all wrap-up tasks.

How many references are required for my application?

We ask for four references, even though only three are required by our licensing. This ensures we have everything covered to process your application smoothly.

Will food and housing be provided?

Yes! As a CIT or SWAT, you’ll join your assigned group for the week and stay in the lodge with campers and counselors. Comfortable housing and meals are provided, so you’ll have everything you need to focus on learning, growing, and leading.

Are the CIT and SWAT programs volunteer positions?

The CIT program is a volunteer role. SWAT participants pay a discounted fee for the week, which helps cover the costs of meals and housing.

Can I volunteer in the CIT program for more than one week?

Due to limited availability (only 2–4 CITs per week), we may ask participants to limit their time to volunteer for one week so more students can experience the program.

However, if you have a heart for camp and a story of how God has worked in your life here, you may be invited to return for a week as a Student With A Testimony (SWAT) at a discounted fee.

Many campers begin their leadership journey as a SWAT before becoming a CIT, but participation in the SWAT program is not a requirement.

How do I apply for CIT or SWAT?

We recommend you email our Program Director to inquire about the Counselor In Training (C.I.T.) and the Student With A Testimony (S.W.A.T.) programs to see what is the best fit for you. When you are ready, with your reference, click here to apply! Spots are limited, so be sure to apply early.
